Overview

Hundreds of new video games hit the market each year. Of those productions, only handfuls are able to achieve mainstream success. With millions of gamers searching for the best new program, everyone wants to know what makes them sell. People get hyped on graphics, abilities and tasks. But, studies have shown that the social and emotional aspects of the game are able to make or break its success. What makes a game addictive is the capacity to maintain interest over an extended period of time. Some of the most notable games to inspire such addictions are Halo, Grand Theft Auto, and World of Warcraft. Following the initial release of these games, they swept the international gaming market and quickly created a demand for sequels. To recognize these successes, the Game Developers Choice Awards were introduced in 2001. While there are numerous categories involved, the Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes the achievements of a developer who has impacted games and game development in a monumental fashion. The last three recipients have been Peter Molyneux for God games, John Carmack for the Doom series and Hideo Kojima for the Metal Gear series.
